The Toys all lived in the Jamaica, New York area when they
formed the singing group, original members were
Barbara Harris (lead vocal),
Barbara Parritt and
June Montiero.
The Toys were discovered and managed by Vince Marc, who brought streetcorner harmony group
to the attention of songwriters Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell. They wrote "A Lover's Concerto."
Bob Crewe, the record producer responsible for most of The Four Season's hits on Vee Jay, arranged
and conducted the record
which made it to number 2 on the national Charts, which was The Toys only top twenty
charted song, unfortunately. Their re-make of
Brian Hyland's "Sealed With A Kiss" barely skimmed Billboards Top 100 ("bubbling under,"
as the trade called it) in the summer of 1967.
The Toys appeared on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand," "Shindig," and "Hullabaloo," (this clip), their
last national network television appearance.
The Toys also had a non-bikini clad cameo role in "It's A Bikini World," a quickie beach rock and roller
that whizzed through a few theaters in 1967. They were asked to don skimpy bikinis,
presumably the sex shock way to upstart their fading careeer. The girls declined.
The Toys broke up in 1968, never yet to resurface for a reunion, not even on any of the
T.J. Lubinsky Doo Wop concerts for public broadcasting.
Barbara Harris' New CD It's called "Barbara Harris Now," and the
lead singer of "The Toys" has never sounded better. It's available at the
your usual online music roosts including amazon.com.
